The Duolingo English Test (DET) is a fully computer-based, adaptive English proficiency exam completed in about an hour, entirely online from home. The test is divided into three sections: a 5-minute introduction and onboarding phase to verify your ID and check your equipment, a 45-minute graded adaptive test that mixes reading, listening, writing, and speaking tasks randomly, and a final 10-minute ungraded writing and speaking sample that is sent directly to institutions. The adaptive algorithm adjusts question difficulty in real time based on your performance, making each test-taker’s experience unique. Scores are reported on a scale of 10 to 160, in increments of 5, and you receive both an overall score and four subscores: Literacy (Reading + Writing), Comprehension (Reading + Listening), Conversation (Listening + Speaking), and Production (Writing + Speaking). A score of 120 or above is generally considered competitive for most universities, while top programs may require 130+.
Key Preparation Strategies
Effective DET preparation begins with mastering the 13 distinct question types. Key reading tasks include Read and Select (identifying real English words in 5 seconds), Fill in the Blanks (completing missing words in sentences), Read and Complete (restoring multiple missing letters in paragraphs), and Interactive Reading (answering 6 related questions about a passage that progressively reveals content). Listening tasks include Listen and Type (dictation with up to 3 audio plays) and Interactive Listening (simulated academic conversations requiring response selection and summary writing). Speaking tasks include Speak About the Photo, Read, Then Speak, and the ungraded Speaking Sample, while writing tasks include Write About the Photo, Interactive Writing (a prompt followed by a related follow-up question), and an ungraded Writing Sample essay. Since the test is adaptive, focusing on accuracy early on is critical, as early correct answers unlock harder questions that carry more weight toward your final score.
Resources, Common Mistakes & Timeline
Preparation resources include free official practice materials on the DET website, third‑party platforms like DE Practice (with over 18,000 practice questions and full‑length mock exams), and typing speed tools, as fast, accurate typing is essential for timed writing tasks. Common mistakes to avoid include looking away from the screen (which can trigger invalidation), using prohibited tools like Grammarly or VPNs during the test, having poor lighting or background noise, speaking too fast due to nervousness, and submitting writing without checking for basic grammatical errors. For speaking tasks, fluency matters more than accent, and memorized responses are flagged as unnatural. With 4–5 weeks of targeted daily practice including familiarization with all 13 question types, timed mock tests, and focused work on weaker sub scores most test-takers can significantly improve their scores.
